I call this the ghettoborn. it's built like a danelectro  with masonite top and bottom and a pine frame.

I've got a hankering to build my first lap steel guitar.  I'm thinking on doing a 6 string.  What are folks doing for string spacing? And what's a pretty standard scale length?  Also, are you going with a standard set of strings or with lap-steel strings?

strings depend on tuning. I prefer 25.5 for the scale but most electric lap steels are more like 23"

i used proper C tuning lap steel strings for my 8 stringer matte, bit pricey but only intended to make one so i got them from germany.

as for string spacing, i just went for a uniform gap between the strings/

good luck with the build!

okay, let me be more specific this time.  Are there any good lap steel tunings that will work on a standard set of guitar strings?

I'm in the process of making two different lap steels.  One is the more elaborate one that I'm taking my time on.  I bought decent wood for it and it'll have a mag-pup, volume & tone controls, pick guard, etc.  I'm waiting for parts on that one.  I'm not sure what strings i'm going to put on that one yet, because I'm still trying to figure out what tuning I want to go with.

I've also got another one going that I'm just throwing together from stuff I've got on hand.  It's basically just a 2x6 with strings and a piezo pup so I have something to play with until I get the other one done.  So I'm hoping there's a tuning that'll work on a standard set of guitar strings.

DADGAD will work with a standard set

Well I threw together my first lap steel guitar this weekend.  It started out as a dumpstered scrap of 2x6.  I added zither pin tuners, an angle iron nut, a candy tin with a couple piezos inside and a screw for a bridge, half a hinge for a tailpiece and some carpet tacks for fret markers.  Now I just need to learn how to play the thing.

Here's a couple photos.  There are more in my photos.
