Comment by J.J. Rango on August 15, 2012 at 11:19am me too, hard to tell, some have been a real waste of money and time, some have been way better than any amp i have ever bought, you just never know!
For me thought I noticed the early 70's was always full of power and tone, they are not the best looking but sound the best...the ones from the late 50's look great and deco, really awesome, but rarly sound good : (
Had a spell of making these a while ago. Gets addictive. I have a shelf full now and hoping to sell a few at the UK Boxfest. Some have been disappointing and some surprisingly good, you never know how they're gonna turn out. Some of the best ones are made from old cassette recorders, they seem to overdrive nicely. My best one so far is a British 1960s made Hacker radio, loud as hell and distorts beautifully. Hard to get hold of them at reasonable price though.
Comment by J.J. Rango on August 14, 2012 at 1:07pm yes there is usally over a 1000 at a time on ebay...all shapes and colors, I usally look for "vintage transistor radio" there is a bunch for under about 15 or 20 bucks
Thanks for the invite. I just picked up a bunch of old tube radios I wanted to turn into amps.
Comment by Arnold Kelly on August 13, 2012 at 7:36am Just do a search for "transistor radio" and you'll find tons of them. Only problems these days is that everything on Ebay is either have the item for an outrageous price, or the shipping is WAY more than the cost of the item itself. :)
@J.J. Rango
You say the radios are available for purchase on eBay. Have a link as to what to search for exactly??
