"Thank you Dianne, gives me a place to start. Think I will start at 1/4" and work down a bit at a time until it starts to feel comfortable. No experience with guitars and kind of flapping in the wind. Really like some of your builds. Have put…"
"The old rule of thumb is that you should be able to just squeeze a dime under the strings at the 5th fret, and a nickel at the 12th for good fretting. But if you are fingering fretless, you can go a bit higher. If you'll only be playing slide,…"
Got first build near completion but can not find what height I should set strings at. The guitar is a simple 3 string, 25.5" bridge to nut, and fretless. Will play mostly as a slide but would want to be able to do finger work. Please throw me a bone and don't tell me there is no set height, like several others have, like they are afraid to tell me some secret Need a start point. Have never had a guitar in my hands. Thank you, John
"Ya sanddraggin, I guess you are right. Too many years of working laboratory have made me not want to try anything non-trad. Guess I have to relax and enjoy the build and go with the flow. Thanks for your reply, John"
"Hey John, everybody likes different boxes. I think for most of us our favorite is the one in our hands at the moment. Use whatever you can find, sometimes it's hard for me to get any boxes let alone being picky. I've even been satisfied…"
"Yes Nancy, I mean the mystery wood cigar boxes. Some kind of veneered plywood. I can't help but think these would be sub- standard in sound but have no building experience and as I get the materials togather don't want to start out behind…"
"Curious... do you mean a "thought it was good wood since the grain was so pretty but drats, it's veneer" on an existing cigar box (I just bought one of those on ebay) OR, replacing the side choosen as your soundboard with a veneer…"
Will veneer make a good guitar? What is the difference in tones of veneer and single layer materials in a CBG? Seems I can not find a thin single layer box of proper size. What say you on this subject. Thank you, John
