Silverware Singer Hybrid Box Guitar

SILVERWARE SINGER HYBRID BOX GUITARFinished instrument.Thought I'd share.  This is my newest build, the Silverware Singer. As its name implies it's made from a large silverware box (measures 16 x 11 x 3.5 inches).  Not a small git.THE BACKGROUND.  For a very long time I have been wanting an instrument with special…See More

FlatCat 440...

Just a fun little note.   I just finished building the 440th FlatCat guitar pickup.  Doesn't that make it a uh... FlatCat 440?  ;DOkay, bad musical pun.  Still, it's a mini-milestone.  Thought I'd write a brief article about the pickup itself.  This isn't in the interest of advertising (although it may be perceived as such), but just of simple tale of a journey, of "what can happen if you stick with a goal".An article about the FlatCat cannot be mentioned without speaking of Elmar's original…See More

Fender Mustant I Modeling Amp

In another forum we were discussing basic sound coming from an instrument and Ted mentioned " "I have a tone control on my amp!!"No truer statement ever made when it comes to getting sound out of a cigar box.  Facing reality, cigar box guitars are fantastic instruments.  They're home-made, hand-made and are incredible folk music devices-- but compared to a regular full-size acoustic guitar, acoustically they just don't cut it.  CBGs have their own sound and they're wonderful... but they really…See More

New FlatCats... Gen 7!

FlatCat Gen7 LinkAs my friends know I regularly experiment with new ideas (as do most of us) to see what kind of sounds can come from what.   Over the past year I got an itch to try and build a totally-new-design flat pickup even more powerful than my prior FlatCats.…See More

Missing Children -- The Alienation Process

Posted on October 13, 2015 at 8:30am 0 Comments

This is totally off-subject of handmade instruments.   However, it has much to do with how our skills are handed down and how our children are educated.

We are all aware of today's situation.  We get up in the morning, rush through breakfast (if we eat at all), the dad pecks his wife on the cheek, says bye to the children (if they're awake yet... he may have to get up early to commute to work).  Mother rushes off to work, leaving children in the hands of the sitter, who rushes…

I have a brother with a 2000 sq foot shop, and another brother who works for the smithsonian. He has a forge in his back yard and he makes his own hand tools. His shop is located in a 150 year old pole barn......its big. When he is not working he hangs out with the Hill Billy's and they make guitars. Sadly he does not think cigar box guitars are much more than a toy. I am working really hard to show him they are real instruments. For about 3 years I worked with him in his shop as the draft person. I am a girl with a woodshop. My shop is only 12x16, but it is organized and I can do a ton of stuff in it. Sometimes I have to roll my equipment outside to work on a project.

Hey Wayfinder I used my horizontal boaring machine to drill the perfect hole in my guitar for the golf club. Fits like a glove and light as air. That was a great idea. That is what I miss is your outside the box thinkin. Happy to see you.

Wayfinder, it was like my dog died when you left CBN. I very much missed your insight and comments. I found out you were here. I joined for that reason and this also offers more opportunities to builders to enjoy like minded folks.
