Cigar Box Guitar Headquarters - CBG HQ

always wanted to try a lap steel guitar and finally got a nice piece of 3 1/3 by 2 1/2 iroko.
so, here goes

decided on an 8 string setup. first to route out the basic shape

always take extra care when using a router - too many 3 fingered carpenters around already :)

still to decide on the tuners, slotted head or tuners underneath?

the rain today was unreal. hoped to do more but had to admit defeat.....for now

UPDATE

it's still raining in biblical proportions so no router today.
cut in the fret positions, which i had marked while the neck was still square - 23 inch scale.

going for a slotted type head with the tuners side mounted, four per side.

decided to just do the headstock with the drill. marked the depth with a bit of tape on the bit
and drilled about a million holes (more like 20)

now to chisel out the mess

not as neat as the router but still pretty good

so, the neck is a good bit down the road now. gonna have to start thinking about a tailpiece etc
hope to use a six string pickup, which is the same width as the neck

still so much to do...

UPDATE

some progress last night. made the cut outs for the pick up and the electrics

also gave the fretboard a good sand and 1st coat of oil

still final sanding on the neck to do, so now i can get on with the tailpiece and bridge

UPDATE

Finally finished sanding. this was a real chore to do

dont even think about it...

these are my 'chunky frets'

simply carve a groove with a triangle file, then epoxy the nails down

dont have any exotic wood for the pick up covers, but i have got some nice walnut veneer

veneered the headstock and french polished the front

the frets are now done

looks like a guitar at last

need to wait for the strings to arrive before i move on

small update

got the pickup wired in. single coil lipstick

chickenhead volume control

tuners installed

fret markers done. small star pins from a £1 shop.

think i can see the finishing line now...

finally made the bridge. piece of jatoba with walnut veneer, attached with two brass 2 inch screws.

cant wait to string this up
.................................................................................................................................................................
strings on. action is 15mm(!)

camel bone nut. tuned C6 G-A-C-E-g-a-c-e

must admit ive had great fun making this - hope it inspires a few more lap steel builds. im off now to learn how to actually play
